How on earth can a woman write mantalk – I hear you say?. Well it’s only actually one woman and I am talking merely from own point of view…

It’s a hard-hitting and difficult start to a blog here guys as our first chat but I have been thinking about you and men’s health and wellbeing as we start our New Year in 2017.

I’m so glad that there is more of a media focus encouraging you to open up and share how you feel and really talk…. There is such a high incidence of young men suffering from serious mental health disorders now …Forgive me for discussing this but if only to offer some hope, support and help perhaps… I beg you to please encourage any teens and young men you know that may be inwardly struggling to try and open up and talk to friends and family…and get urgent expert help and support…. I’m going to be talking to some brave and open men later in the year about this very sensitive subject and thankfully they managed to turn their lives back around…

Sorry to start our first chat like this but it really bothers me… so please take care out there…

Another thought is that there also needs to be an industry shake up on diversity too – I recently tuned into a fascinating BBC Radio 4 radio programme (Seriously Acting Disabled I think it was called) talking about how disabled people are being largely under-represented in movies and tv. Whilst movies have won awards by incredible showbiz talent representing characters with disabilities – children’s tv has been leading the way over and above the film industry with great representation in acting. I did hear a rumour that Doctor Who may be making a pledge for an actor with disability and again a programme with a large number of younger viewers ( me included as a child!).

Lastly look at how the tribute film to Michael Jackson had to be cancelled …. but after two years the Oscar nominations are racially diverse this year with 7 out of the 20 performance nominations going to actors of colour reflective of a new multi-cultural America. The Academy has a goal to double the diversity by 2020 so watch this space.
